The foundation of your retirement
For most of us Personal Pensions remain the foundation of any retirement portfolio. Whilst the word pension has featured significantly in the press in recent years this has had little to do with Personal Pensions, however, the fact remains that a Personal Pension is still the most suitable retirement provision tool for most of us to save effectively and tax efficiently.
The basics
Personal Pensions are widely available through a number of providers and essentially give you a platform from which to allocate your contributions to a number of diverse funds.
The funds are normally rated on level of risk giving you the ability to distribute your previous and current contributions where they will best perform in line with your objectives, attitude to risk and the period of time until you are due to retire.
It is important to consider attitude to risk. Normally, you are in a position to take greater risk when you are say 30 years from retirement as you still have time to recover from any dips in the market. Although it stands to reason that if you are only a few years from retirement you want to just protect and nurture the bulk of your fund as if anything goes wrong now you could jeopardise your retirement plans.
